world lit analysis&citatio

This semester of WL has really opened my eyes to the different cultures and literature around the world. Reading and understanding literature from different time periods, from different places adds to my understanding of the human experience. When one reads and understands the literature of a different culture, they're are less likely to judge, simply because they understand, they will see things from a different perspective. Literature is very diverse but very intertwined with each other, different works of literature influences another, and then another, a chain reaction. What's important is that we learn from them, apply what the author tries to express and apply that into our everyday lives and use the message to help us make better decisions. Literature is every where we go, every thing around us is influenced by world literature one way or another, it's a important part of our society. I specially enjoyed reading The Lord of  Flies this semester; even though I've already read the book before this class, it was taught very differently from the previous time. This time, I understood the concept of the island being a symbol of the world, and the beast exists within everyone, even the adults.

                                                   Swift

“I am assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London; that a young healthy child, well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food; whether stewed, roasted, baked or boiled, and I make no doubt, that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or ragout.”
(Swift 2070.
This is a very ironic and satiric line from The Modest Proposal. Swift claims his proposal of suggesting the people of Ireland to eat their children is a "modest" proposal while the idea of eating babies is bizarre and wild.

Campbell

“The German soldier who dies is as much a hero as the American who was sent over to kill them.” (Campbell 127).
War is a great example of the hero/villain concept. The hero is the villain, and the villain is the hero in the enemies’ eyes. Soldiers from both sides died for the same cause-war. They died to save people, to end war, so they are both heroes at the same time as they’re villain because they also killed other soldiers in order to be a hero. The concept of hero/villain is intertwined and there’s only a fine line that separates the hero from the villain, although often the line does not even exist.

Golding
"Fear can't hurt you more than a dream." (Golding 83).
Ralph realizes the boys are only frightened of themselves, fear becomes paralyzing and unbeatable by the realization that the only thing they have to to fear is fear itself.

Kick-ass. They dont have super human powers, but they do have the heart to be real-life super-hero and bring justice back to the corrupt world. A symbol for people to look up to, to believe in. To show people that  heros dont just exist in movies and comics.

The avengers not only have super human powers to help protect the earth, but they also have the non-physical traits of a hero. They put aside their own differences and disagreements to stick together and protect their people. Thor is the older brother of the enemy, even though it pains him to fight his own family, he must do what is right.

Batman is a true hero not only because he has extraordinary set up to be a superhero but also is selfless and does the best he can to protect his city. He didn't ever give up on his city, even though it was attacked three different times. He stayed loyal to his city&people through everything and sacrificed his good name to protect a fellow citizen and the image of good vs evil

Demi lovato is a hero because she over came depression, cutting and several eat disorders. She had her fair share of struggles but she pulled through and now inspires many young people around the world. After treatment she got "stay strong" tattooed on her wrists over her cutting scars to always remind her to be strong.

A true hero should be confident but not cocky. The hero must have faith&believe in themselves so others can look up to them. Confidence is reassuring for the ones who doubt the hero's abilities. A hero must find the balance between being confident enough to be friendly and inviting but humble enough to not be ignorant.

A true hero must be determined. To have the will power too keep fighting even when it's hard. To have faith when things look dark.  To be driven enough to keep going up against all odds.

A hero is always smart. Intelligence is a must for heroes, they have to be able to think straight under pressure. To show extraordinary abilities and use those abilities when necessary. To react to things in a calm and effective  manner. Having a strong mind and being able to have a clear mind during chaos.

You have to be selfless in your life to be remembered as a hero. A hero must learn to sacrifice their own happiness or even life for the ones they are fighting one. They must put others before themselves.

Loyalty. A hero is always loyal to their friends&family. A hero NEVER betrays. Harry Potter stayed loyal to his friends and the school to battle the dark lord even when he was offered to help the dark lord

Bravery
A hero is always brave. They have to be brave to protect and fight for the ones they love. Bravery isn't only to stand up to others, but to themselves too. To stand up to their own fears and peers takes a lot more courage than to stand up to your enemies.

This picture represents me because I think I'm a very well balanced person. I'm very friendly&out going most of the time but I can be cold when I need to be. There also light&dark in everyone's life, in mine as well. it's really important to me to be able to balance out the light&dark and focus more the on positive.
